Firefox appears to have some validation issues with the optional XML output.

The "problem" with the empty lines was caused by whitespaces in various places inside config.inc. Removing those whitespaces solved the problem.

This appears to be a known Firefox issue:

I have just confirmed by deleted all linebreaks and whitespaces in the beginning of the document, which solved the problem when I opened the XML file from a local source.
